Our Training and Experience
August 2025 Serious Science Seminar: Advanced Blood-Alcohol Analysis and Trial Advocacy
In August 2025, attorney Marcus Gunn attended the six-day Serious Science Seminar through the National College for DUI Defense in Arlington, Texas. Only the third attorney licensed in the State of Oregon to complete the course, he learned about the procedures for collecting, storing, and analyzing blood-alcohol samples. Part of the training included lab hours at the Shimadzu Lab at the University of Texas—Arlington, where he prepared a (cow) blood sample for testing through headspace gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector instrument (GC-FID). At the lab, he also observed Liquid Chromatographs and Mass Spectrometers (LC-MS), which are commonly used for blood-drug and urine-drug testing.
For two days, experts discussed the various errors that can occur during a blood draw, blood sample storage, and potential errors associated with blood-alcohol testing. They also discussed which records should be requested from the crime lab to obtain a complete picture of its scientific background and procedures.
The remainder of the course focused on applying scientific knowledge from the lab to trial advocacy, including explaining the science to jurors during voir dire, the opening statement, cross-examination of the state’s witnesses, and closing arguments.
October 2024 Standardized Field Sobriety Test Training
In October 2024, both Marcus and Marc attended a three-day course through the National College for DUI Defense in Baltimore, Maryland. This course, presented by three Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) Instructors, was crafted to include the NHTSA SFST Course completed by police officers at the academy, using the same participant manual, demonstrations, and certification processes used by law enforcement. The primary instructor was Anthony Palacios, a former SFST Instructor, ARIDE instructor, and DRE instructor for the Georgia Highway Patrol, who later became a DUI Defense expert witness.
In addition to the same certification training, the final day of the course covered conducting a cross-examination of the arresting officer regarding the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.
January 2020 Attacking the Drug Recognition Expert Opinion
In January 2020, Marc and Marcus attended a two-day course presented by a former Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) who is now a practicing DUII attorney. During the course, the presenters reviewed the SFSTs, including the tips and tricks officers use to “cheat,” demonstrated by a trial run of the SFSTs. It also highlighted the weaknesses in the scientific validity of the DRE evaluation and how to critique the DRE’s track record with identifying non-alcohol drug impairment.

We can answer questions such as “How long is your license suspended for DUI?” “How do I avoid license suspension after a DUI?” and “Is my license suspended immediately after a DUI?”. You can also find many DUI questions and answers on this website. Important: If you are stopped for any reason and are concerned about a possible DUI charge, you can immediately ask for a lawyer. If you are arrested, you do not have an obligation to talk to the police, and in fact, most people convict themselves when they do talk to the police.
